The Box Tops – The Letter

Blue eyed soul meets pop music

“The Letter” reached Billboard’s number one spot in September of 1967 and remained there for one month. The next year their “Cry Like a Baby” peaked at #2 being blocked by Bobby Goldsboro’s “Honey.” Some of you may also remember their minor hit, “Sweet Cream Ladies, Forward March” which for some reason is my very fave song by this Memphis, Tenn band.

  1. Fun fact: Their two 1968 hits were technically performed by a different band because the original drummer and keyboard player went back to college that year to avoid the draft and were no longer with the group. Both would survive uni and eventually come back to rejoin The Box Tops.

  2. I am pretty sure I have heard almost every song that has ever been written, but I have no idea about the bands that did them: I have been listening to this song for as long as I can remember, but I always thought the guy singing was Black. Really, seriously, I never realized until you posted this video that the guy who sang this song was White. 🙂
