We saw one last night , at the West End Fair in Gilbert, Pa.
It reminded me of a cockfight or dogfight, except then you remember of course that there are men inside the vehicles. But the growling, the higher keening sounds: you could almost believe you were watching feral cars!
When I did remind myself that the cars were manned, I thought of the gladiators.
The crowd loved each impact! And , I mean , #metoo—i reckon because of the sheer abandon: when we drive, we hafta be so careful NOT to hit another car. And who hasnt fantasized about…just indiscriminately ramming other cars?
CTFO, it’s irresistible!
These beat-up, beyond-redemption sedans and SUVs savaged each other, grunting and squealing in the mud of the arena!
But it was also a potlatch kinda spectacle: wealth was being destroyed before our eyes, simply for our viewing pleasure! After all, these were functional vehicles. They coulda been exported to South America and lived useful lives for another 20-30 years.
My takeaway?
How incredibly lucky we are, all who are alive to read this, to live our lives in a time and place of such abundance. It is a historical rarity which is unlikely to reoccur.
Or to persist for much longer.
Carpe diem!
